A line of dialogue from the “Kingdom of Heaven”…

“I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those that can not help themselves. And Godness…what God desires…is here (pointing to the head) and here (pointing to the heart) and what you decide to do every day to be a good man…or not.”

Discounting the context of the film…and the intent of its creators…consider the message itself instead. Religion, with a general definition, DOES matter. Spiritual thought and action does matter.

For some, Organized Religion is the guide and support to making moral/ethical choices. For others, right action and courage come naturally. For all, the belief in the righteous PATH, is necessary.

But, philosophy has nevered answered the question, “why are we here?” And, science has only answered, “why are we here?” (FSM anyone???)

In a society where church and state are (supposed to be) separate, the “we” of that question needs to also be addressed. Unfortunately, the state alone is ill-equipped to provide examples of the rightheous PATH for the “we”. And, the church is unwilling to even admit that there is a “we”. Instead, the church (or its leadership) substitutes itself in place of the “we”. Neither institution is perfect…they are human constructs after all.

So, I choose to combine the two. I try to live a spiritual life, knowing that the Metaphysical God (in every name) can talk to me anywhere and does so without intermediaries. And, since the state doesn’t do this, I look to religion to teach people (especially the young) what right and courageous action should be. And, because I don’t think religion should be in the lawmaking business, I “render unto Caesar” everything else.
